ABOUT THE PURPLE MARTIN
The Purple Martin was founded in 2011 with the determination to transform the lives of foster children and local youth through social change. Our programs will give children the chance to have fun together, learn and know a happy time in a safe place. They will explore building self esteem, nature, conserving natural resources, and appreciating the sheer beauty and simple joys of Northern Michigan. The organization will also create and sponsor innovative outreach programs that benefit children, the environment, and the local economy.
The Purple Martin board of directors has four officers and four board members from many diverse occupations and experiences. Our 501(c)(3) status was approved by the IRS in May 2013, although the organization has hosted and sponsored programs since 2011.
Since its inception, The Purple Martin has hosted and supported many events that help foster children. Each new school year, the organization fills backpacks full of back-to-school supplies. During the holiday season, the group collects names, then wraps and donates Christmas gifts. At Easter, The Purple Martin gave the local Kiwanis Club a candy donation for their Easter egg hunt.
Over the Labor Day weekend in May 2012 and 2013, the group hosted Purple Martin Mania in Rogers City. The event included a speaking engagement by author and child advocate Jeanne Fowler and a dance under the only traffic light in the county. There was also a pet parade and chalk art contest held for children. All events were a big success.
The largest event the organization hosts is The Purple Martin’s Someplace Warm Camp. The first event was held at Camp Chickagami in Presque Isle County in August 2013. Our flagship program is an educational opportunity for at-risk youth, foster children and their foster siblings. Through this no-cost camp and its programs, we hope to give children an experience they might not otherwise have.
Next year, we hope to do something more for foster children and invite their own siblings. Many foster children are split apart when placed in care and do not see their brothers and sisters with any frequency. Not only will this camp serve to educate and give them fun summer memories, Someplace Warm will reunite them with siblings they might not otherwise see.
We are, above all, dedicated to improving the lives of all children.
